From humble beginnings, Gamma Group has grown into a cornerstone of industry and innovation in Mauritius. With strategic expansion, bold acquisitions, and diversification into sectors like construction, property development, and gaming technology, Gamma has made an indelible mark on the island’s economy and infrastructure. Below is a chronicle of the key milestones that have defined the journey of Gamma Group and its subsidiaries.
Founded in 1961, the company transformed in 1988 when a group of entrepreneurs, led by Carl Ah Teck, restructured operations, focusing on building materials and engineering contracting. Significant investments in modernisation during this period fueled growth, positioning the company to meet Mauritius’s rising construction demands.
On 28 March 1994, the company rebranded as Gamma Civic Ltd, reflecting its ambition to lead and diversify in the Mauritian market. By 30 November 1994, it was proudly listed on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius, marking a new era of growth and success.
The late 1990s and early 2000s marked a period of strategic expansion for Gamma Civic. In 1999, it launched Gamma Materials Ltd to produce high- quality building materials. A year later, it entered the hospitality sector with the Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa, owned by affiliate Morning Light Co Ltd, and strengthened its cement operations with a new terminal through its subsidiary, now Kolos Cement Ltd.
Gamma also expanded its stone crushing operations, adding new plants in 2001 and 2005, cementing its leadership in the different sectors where it operates. In 2007, Morning Light Co Ltd listed on the Development & Enterprise Market of the Stock Exchange of Mauritius.
Meanwhile, Gamma Construction Ltd, a key subsidiary, has been pivotal in major infrastructural projects, contributing to bridges, pipelines, harbour walls, drainage systems, and canals, shaping the nation’s infrastructure landscape.
In 2009, Gamma Civic entered the gaming industry by launching the Mauritius National Lottery through its subsidiary Lottotech Ltd, promoting responsible gaming. In 2010, the Gamma Foundation was established, highlighting its dedication to corporate social responsibility.
By 2013, Gamma transitioned into an investment holding company with a private equity approach, publishing the Gamma Charter in 2014 to enhance governance. That same year, it listed Lottotech Ltd on the Stock Exchange of Mauritius and acquired 51% shareholding of Holcim Group in Holcim (Mauritius) Ltd (now Kolos Cement Ltd), asserting its leadership in cement production.
By 2015, Gamma had evolved into a professionally managed organisation, cementing its status as a leader in construction and governance excellence.
Kolos Cement Ltd was successfully listed on the Development & Enterprise Market of the Stock Exchange of Mauritius, reaffirming its standing as a major industrial player.
In 2019, the company enhanced its property development portfolio with the construction of Burford House in Ebene, demonstrating its commitment to sustainable infrastructure.
In 2021 Gamma successfully launched Mafonja Cement in Madagascar, through Kolos Madagascar in February 2024, Gamma, with its cement strategic partner, Cemindo Gemilang, completed the acquisition of Cementis Madagascar, subsequently renamed Alpha Ciment SA. As the only industrial cement producer in Madagascar, Alpha Ciment SA strengthens our regional leadership in the Building Materials cluster.
In April 2022, Gamma concluded a strategic investment in a French headquartered group with multiple operations in Africa and with a track record of delivering technology and distribution infrastructure to gaming operators.
